GOEPPERTIA

Goeppertia inocephala

A wet-tropical perennial transferred from Calathea to Goeppertia in 2012, with a synonymy stretching back to Kuntze's 1891 Revisio Generum Plantarum.

Overview

Goeppertia inocephala (Kuntze) Borchs. & S.Suárez is an accepted species of the family Marantaceae. Plants of the World Online (POWO), maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, records the species as a perennial growing primarily in the wet tropical biome [1]. It belongs to the genus Goeppertia Nees, which Borchsenius, Suárez and Prince (2012) demonstrated to be the appropriate generic placement after their molecular phylogenetic analysis showed that Calathea G.Mey., as previously circumscribed, was polyphyletic [2]. That 2012 revision published 246 new combinations transferring species from Calathea to Goeppertia, of which G. inocephala is one [2].

The genus Goeppertia Nees encompasses an estimated 260 species and is the largest genus within Marantaceae. In horticultural trade the genus is commonly referred to under the name calatheas, a legacy of the prior placement in Calathea. No International Cultivar Registration Authority has been appointed for Marantaceae, a condition documented by the International Society for Horticultural Science list of appointed cultivar registration authorities and applicable to all species within the family [5].

Nomenclature and synonymy

The accepted name is Goeppertia inocephala (Kuntze) Borchs. & S.Suárez. POWO records the combination as first published in Systematic Botany 37: 631 in 2012 [1], and the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy independently confirms the accepted name [4].

The basionym is Phyllodes inocephalum Kuntze, published in Otto Kuntze's Revisio Generum Plantarum vol. 2: 694. The International Plant Names Index (IPNI) records this basionym at Revis. Gen. Pl. 2: 694 and dates the publication of volumes 1 and 2 to 5 November 1891, attributing authorship to Kuntze [3].

Two subsequent combinations under Calathea are recorded in the literature. The first, Calathea inocephala (Kuntze) T.Durand & B.D.Jacks., appeared in Index Kewensis, Supplement 1: 72 in 1902. The second, Calathea inocephala (Kuntze) H.Kenn. & Nicolson, was published in the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden 62: 501 in 1975, as recorded by IPNI [3]. Both combinations are now treated as synonyms of the accepted name.

POWO lists three synonyms for the species: Phyllodes inocephalum Kuntze (1891), Calathea inocephala (Kuntze) T.Durand & B.D.Jacks. (1902), and Calathea barbillana Cufod. [1]. The GBIF Backbone Taxonomy records a fourth synonym, adding Calathea inocephala (Kuntze) H.Kenn. & Nicolson (1975) to that list [4]. The name Calathea barbillana Cufod. is listed as a synonym under both POWO and the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy [1][4].

Authorship and publication history

The species was first described by the German botanist Otto Kuntze in 1891. Kuntze placed it under the genus name Phyllodes, publishing the name Phyllodes inocephalum Kuntze at page 694 of the second volume of his Revisio Generum Plantarum, issued on 5 November 1891 at Leipzig by the publisher A. Felix. IPNI confirms Kuntze as the author of the basionym at that page and date [3].

The current combination, Goeppertia inocephala (Kuntze) Borchs. & S.Suárez, was published by Finn Borchsenius and Sandra Suárez as part of their 2012 revision of Calathea in Systematic Botany 37(3): 620–635. The combination appears at page 631 of that paper [2]. The 2012 revision, co-authored with Lois M. Prince, used molecular phylogenetic evidence to demonstrate that Calathea as previously circumscribed was polyphyletic, and it established 246 new combinations under Goeppertia Nees as the resolution to that problem [2]. No originator, parentage, or cultivar selection event is applicable to this species: it is a wild taxon, not a bred or selected cultivar.

Description

Plants of the World Online describes Goeppertia inocephala as a perennial growing primarily in the wet tropical biome [1]. Limited authoritative sources available; further research needed.

Distribution and habitat

Plants of the World Online records the native range of Goeppertia inocephala as extending from Mexico (Chiapas) to South Tropical America and Trinidad [1]. The country-level distribution listed by POWO spans Belize, Brazil (North), Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico (Southeast), Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Trinidad-Tobago, and Venezuela [1]. The species is described by POWO as occurring primarily in the wet tropical biome, consistent with the forest-floor habitats typical of the family Marantaceae across its range in the Neotropics [1].

No plant patent has been located for Goeppertia inocephala, and no protected variety status under any intellectual property instrument has been identified in any primary record consulted for this article. The species carries no documented patent term or other commercial protection.

In cultivation

The registry records Goeppertia inocephala as in cultivation. The synonym Calathea barbillana Cufod. is documented by both POWO and the GBIF Backbone Taxonomy as a name that has been applied to this species [1][4], and this name continues to appear in horticultural contexts for plants now accepted under the Goeppertia inocephala binomial. Growers and collectors encountering material labelled Calathea barbillana should be aware that this name is treated as a synonym of G. inocephala under both of those authorities.

No cultivars of Goeppertia inocephala are recorded in this registry. No International Cultivar Registration Authority has been appointed for Marantaceae [5], meaning no formal cultivar registration infrastructure exists for Goeppertia or the broader family. The International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP) requires a cultivar epithet to be enclosed in single quotation marks, but the formal registration process that standard contemplates depends on an appointed authority. The absence of such an authority for Marantaceae is a documented condition of the field applicable to all species within it, not a gap specific to G. inocephala.

Limited authoritative sources are available on the cultivation characteristics or horticultural history of this species; further research needed.
