Major Employers in Vero Beach and Indian River County

The largest employers around Vero Beach are the School District of Indian River County, Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, Indian River County government, Piper Aircraft and Publix, according to the county's fiscal 2025 financial report.

Indian River County publishes its principal employers list each year as Schedule 15 of its Annual Comprehensive Financial Report, filed through the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller (Indian River County ACFR, fiscal year 2025). The ten names below employ 11,533 people, or 17.06% of a county labor force of 67,543. The list is countywide, but most of these payrolls sit in or beside Vero Beach, the county seat.

The county line counts more than the commission staff: a footnote in the schedule says it includes the Board of County Commissioners, the Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller, the Supervisor of Elections, the Property Appraiser, the Sheriff and the Tax Collector. Employee counts come from the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce and county annual budgets, and the labor force total from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Between 2016 and 2025 the Indian River County top ten grew from 9,885 to 11,533 employees, Piper Aircraft nearly doubled from 750 to 1,400, and the City of Vero Beach dropped off the list.

The 2016 column of the county schedule places the City of Vero Beach ninth with 424 employees (ACFR Schedule 15, 2016 column). The city later sold its electric utility to Florida Power and Light, and its 2026-27 budget book counts 348 full-time authorized positions, 86 of them in the Vero Beach Police Department (City of Vero Beach FY 2026-2027 budget book). Two hospital names also changed: Indian River Medical Center became Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital effective January 1, 2019, and Sebastian River Medical Center became Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital in October 2024.

Headcounts for the same Vero Beach employer differ by publisher, and the gap matters to anyone quoting them. The chamber's economic development home page gives Piper Aircraft approximately 1,500 employees (Indian River County Economic Development) against 1,400 in the county schedule, and the chamber healthcare page lists Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital at 2,600 (healthcare employers table) against 2,027. The county figure appears in a dated annual financial report (as an unaudited statistical schedule), while the chamber employer tables show no date.

Piper Aircraft, which sells business, personal and trainer aircraft lines, is headquartered at Vero Beach Regional Airport, and in July 2026 it announced a service center that the company projects will add at least 20 positions.

The chamber describes Piper as Indian River County's largest manufacturing employer and one of the 'Big Three' in general aviation with Cessna and Beechcraft, headquartered in Vero Beach for almost 100 years (Indian River County Economic Development). Its address is 2926 Piper Drive (Piper Aircraft). On July 20, 2026, Piper announced a two-story service center on its 30-acre Vero Beach campus with over 33,000 square feet of indoor space and seven indoor and four outdoor aircraft bays, opening in the fourth quarter of 2027 (Piper Aircraft press release). The company projects at least 20 new positions, including technicians and A&P mechanics, and calls itself the largest private employer in Indian River County.

Piper is the anchor of a cluster at the city-owned Vero Beach Regional Airport, which reports more than 100 small to large businesses on site, including Skyborne Airline Academy, Sun Aviation, Paris Air, Corporate Aircraft Service and JP Aviation (Vero Beach Regional Airport FAQ). The airport shrank to about 1,660 acres through FAA-approved land sales to Piper Aircraft, the Brooklyn Dodgers and FlightSafety International. Smaller Indian River County manufacturers on the chamber list include Parker Hannifin, M.A. Ford, Girard Equipment and Novurania of America, each in the 50 to 99 employee range (manufacturing employers table).

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital at 1000 36th Street in Vero Beach is the largest healthcare employer in Indian River County, ahead of Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital and the Visiting Nurse Association.

The chamber healthcare page describes Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital as a 332-bed, not-for-profit hospital with the Welsh Heart Center, Scully-Welsh Cancer Center and Rosner Family Health and Wellness Center, and Orlando Health Sebastian River Hospital as a 178-bed facility (Indian River County healthcare page). The hospital's main number is 772-567-4311 (Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital).

Medical education is the newest piece. On September 3, 2024, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) and the Indian River County Hospital District, with Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, agreed to place a VCOM educational facility on the Vero Beach hospital campus in an existing building on Hospital District land, where third- and fourth-year medical students train (VCOM announcement).

Public payrolls are the biggest in Indian River County: the School District of Indian River County employs 2,234 and county government 1,455, and the City of Vero Beach budgets 348 full-time positions for 2026-27.

Together the school district and county offices account for 3,689 jobs in the 2025 county schedule, more than Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital and Piper Aircraft combined at 3,427 (county ACFR). The school district also runs Treasure Coast Technical College, which serves students 16 and older, and the chamber workforce page lists Indian River State College, with more than 100 programs on 5 Treasure Coast campuses, and CareerSource Research Coast, which helps employers find and train workers (Indian River County workforce and education page).

Inside Vero Beach city limits, the city's 348 positions break down to 223 in the General Fund and 124 in enterprise funds such as water and sewer (78), the Municipal Airport (16), solid waste (24) and the municipal marina (6), with one more at Crestlawn Cemetery (Vero Beach full-time authorized positions table). Federal statistics put government employment across the Sebastian-Vero Beach metro at 5.2 thousand jobs in August 2026, a preliminary figure (BLS Economy at a Glance).

Education and health services is the largest industry in the Sebastian-Vero Beach metro, with 12.8 thousand jobs in August 2026, followed by trade, transportation and utilities at 10.8 thousand and leisure and hospitality at 7.8 thousand, all preliminary federal figures.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics series covers the Sebastian-Vero Beach metro area, not the city alone (BLS Sebastian-Vero Beach Economy at a Glance). Its preliminary August 2026 unemployment rate was 5.6%, up from 5.2% in March 2026, and total nonfarm jobs were 0.2% lower than a year earlier. Over the year, also preliminary, trade, transportation and utilities fell 1.8% and leisure and hospitality 1.3%, while education and health services grew 2.4%.

Citrus and farming still employ hundreds in Indian River County. The chamber agriculture page lists B & W Quality Growers (arugula) at 200 or more employees and Premier Citrus and Perricone Farms at 100 to 199 each, with Riverfront Groves at 50 to 99 (Indian River County agriculture employers).
